Launch of eNews for professional advisors
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Victoria Foundation’s eNews for professional advisors!
This new resource is for YOU – our partners in the community – to keep you apprised of developments at the Victoria Foundation and in our region; to assist you with facilitating your clients’ philanthropic planning; and to share current news from the charitable sector. We plan to touch base with you four times a year – or more frequently if there is something we think you might want to hear about right away!
The Victoria Foundation remains committed as a strong community leader for the non-profit sector. We believe that philanthropic support is a strategic investment tool. Grants – whether through our discretionary fund or through the advice of fund holders – work to improve or solve issues that affect our community. The causes and institutions, and the people they impact and influence, benefit from this thoughtful approach.
We are grateful to you and your clients for your continued support of the Victoria Foundation and we remain steadfast, as always, to connecting people who care with causes that matter®.

Launch of Victoria Vital Signs® 2010
October 5th marks the launch of the fifth anniversary edition of Victoria’s Vital Signs® an annual community check-up that measures the vitality of our city, identifies significant trends and opportunities and assigns grades in 11 issue areas critical to our quality of life. It provides a snapshot of BC’s Capital Region as a place to live, learn, work and grow.
Published by the Victoria Foundation, Vital Signs® pulls together a combination of public opinion and statistics and compiles it into a concise, reader friendly report that serves to guide community level decision-making and investment. Through Vital Signs®, we recognize that the indicators we measure will influence changes in our community. If you would like a hard copy of the report, please let us know.
Reminder about year-end giving
There are many ways of giving
to support the community through the Victoria Foundation. As December approaches, your clients may want to take advantage of a charitable tax receipt at the end of the calendar year, but wait until the New Year to decide which charities to support. They may do this through their permanent fund or through a pass-through grant that flows directly to their chosen charities. Or your clients may want to realize a capital gain on publicly-listed securities and donate the shares to eliminate the tax on that gain.
If your clients wish to make a gift of publicly-traded securities, please let us know by December 3, 2010. It is easy to do with our donation of securities form. Donations by credit card may be made on-line via our website or phoned into the office at 250.381.5532 until noon on December 31, 2010. Donations by cheque must be dated December 31, 2010 and received by January 7, 2010.
Asking the Philanthropic Question
Donors come to see us when they are thinking about how to plan their charitable gifts now or through their estate plan. They may already support several charities through an annual gift. They look to the Victoria Foundation as an umbrella organization to facilitate their on-going annual support and their legacy gifts.
We are here to serve you and your clients as they ask the philanthropic question: through my volunteer and financial support, what impact do I want to have in my community? For more information about helping your clients answer this question through effective planning, see Sara Neely’s recent article in The Scrivener. Additional resources are available through the Community Foundations of Canada e-resource
and our web site.
